About “Following line features”

Here you learn what line features are and why it is smart to follow them.

Good line features

Line features are details you can easily follow in the terrain and that are easy to see on the map. Paths, streams and roads are often good line features. They are continuous, so you can move on or along them the whole way, often at high speed.

Here are examples of good line features, click on the map symbols:

It is easy to follow small and large paths.

These are also line features, but can be a bit harder to follow:

Follow marsh edges, walk in the forest beside it if the marsh is wet.

Practice noticing line features

You should practice a lot on spotting line features on the map and following them in the terrain. Line features give you a safe route toward the control.

  1. You start in the corner by the building.
  2. First you follow the wall to the fence (1).
  3. Follow the fence until it ends and move onto the path (2).
  4. Follow the path until it reaches the road (3).
  5. Go north on the road and turn right at the junction (4).
  6. Finally follow the path along the stream that leads you to the control.

  3. Go up the path until you reach the road (2).
  4. Follow the road south until it splits (3).
